Wayne writes asking if there is a solution to Blossom End Rot (BER). BER is a calcium deficiency due to low levels of calcium in the soil, inconsistent watering or as in Wayne’s case, 2 weeks of rain. The most susceptible plants are tomatoes and peppers. The telltale sign that you have BER is a dark discoloration at the end of the fruit.

Calcium is essentially the glue that holds the cells together.

The long story short is water moves much faster into the plant than calcium. Low calcium equals BER. I use this product called Rot Stop. Follow the directions for the right mixture and spray the solution into the OPEN FLOWERS. This is the only way to allow the calcium rich solution to place the calcium needed for the tomato/pepper to develop properly.
